Chapter Statement

Our organizations and employees need us (HR) now more than ever…

Dear Chapter Members and Community,

The recent, inhumane death of George Floyd and other tragedies across the country have left many of us in a state of grief and emotional turmoil. These events have also filled many in the United States and around the world with disbelief that in 2020, we are still fighting against systemic racism, injustice, turmoil, and historic oppression of the Black community.

Now, more than ever, the voices of our Human Resource professionals are needed in organizations across the nation. As HR leaders, we have the professional, social, and ethical responsibility to be concerned with matters that impact our organizations, workforce, members, and community. We also have the unique responsibility to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and stand in the gap of inequality, discrimination, and aggression of any kind.

It is our responsibility to guide leadership and support employees through the difficult and tense interactions that often flow from the current events in the news.

We must be intentional with our messaging, activate courageous leadership and take action against racism, injustice, and inequality. We must also remain mindful of any over generalizations that may diminish the issue at hand. These are fundamental values all Americans share and we must do our part to make the American dream a reality for all.

SHRM Jacksonville Board of Directors want our members and the community at-large to know that we stand in solidarity with the Black community and everyone who supports a community that is fair and inclusive. We will never accept the inhumane and inequitable treatment of any community, and specifically the Black community.

The ability to have uncomfortable, authentic conversations to incite real change is the space where HR professionals live each day. SHRM Jacksonville is committed to creating a platform where we can actively affect positive change and end racial injustice and discrimination. To that end, we invite your feedback, suggestions, and participation in future programming, community dialogue and support of organizations that are working towards a better tomorrow.

The SHRM Jacksonville Board of Directors has provided tools and resources to assist you in preparing company statements, creating safe spaces to foster open and honest communication, and to educate yourself on the issues and best practices to move forward to initiate change. Additionally, the following online sessions are being offered specially for our SHRM members and community for FREE:
