Servant leadership seeks to involve others in decision making. Servant leadership is strongly based in ethical and caring behavior and enhances the growth of workers while improving the quality of work and life. From this presentation, you will learn the definition of servant leadership and the ten characteristics of servant leadership, as well as understand how the characteristics of servant leadership build strong relationships.


About the Presenter: 

Sheila Thomas Upson is the CEO of Simply Speaking by Sheila and the Senior Pastor of The Garden of Christ Ministries. Sheila supports leaders in their professional and/or personal lives to inspire, motivate, and transform themselves and those around them. 

Sheila is a graduate of Jacksonville Theological Seminary with a Masters Degree in Ministry and her undergraduate degree from Phoenix University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.

Sheila has spent many years working with supervisors, managers, and executives of various companies coaching them on how to motivate and inspire employees to have not only success but to live a fulfilling life.

Her expertise training includes, but is not limited to: customer service, leadership and communication to name a few.

As a religious, community and civic leader, Sheila has the opportunity to work in collaboration with many other individuals, organizations, and agencies in providing leadership skills.

Ms. Upson is the chair of the Board of Directors for the Garden of Christ Ministries, the CEO of Simply Speaking by Sheila and is a member of the Community Action Network (CAN).

Sheila has participated in Building Leaders, a training program for leaders and emerging leaders; and serves on committees such as Raising Hope, Giving Grace and A Beautiful Masterpiece which are community based.

Sheila feels her role is to coach others in motivation and inspirational activities which lead to living an optimal transformation in their lives.

Anti-Harassment & Discrimination Presenter

 "Best Practices to Avoid Employment Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation Claims"

Brian Hayden, Jackson|Lewis 

The program is designed to provide practical advice to supervisors on best practices to avoid discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims. It will address real-life day-to-day situations faced by managers and provide tips on how to avoid common pitfalls.


About the Presenter: 

Brian L. Hayden is an Associate in the Jacksonville, Florida, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. He has significant experience representing employers in state and federal courts throughout Florida. Since 2010, Mr. Hayden has represented management exclusively in administrative proceedings and litigation involving claims of discrimination, retaliation, breach of contract, and state tort issues. Mr. Hayden’s practice also includes handling appellate matters in Florida’s district courts of appeal and the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeal.

In addition, Mr. Hayden provides preventive advice and counseling to management on a broad range of employment-related issues, including hiring, firing, promotion, training, leave policies, anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies, wage and hour issues, and internal investigations.

"'I didn’t know' Just Cost the Company $100,000 – Employee Relations and Minimizing Legal Risk"

Overview of common employee relations issues that can be easily avoided with a basic understanding of what to do, what to say, what not to do and what not do say. Attendees will learn how to speak to employees in a way that deescalates issues, how to better engage staff, and will gain an understanding of the requirements of the ADA, EEOC, FMLA, and effective documentation that minimizes legal risk.


About the Presenter(s):

Dan Perle has more than 15 years of formal HR experience, working at For Profit, Non-Profit, and Not-for-Profit companies. He earned a BBA from Emory University and a MBA & MHR from University of South Carolina. He has also has been certified by both the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) as a “Senior HR Professional.” In addition, he is the SHRM Advocacy Team Captain for Florida’s District 4 and serves on the Board of Directors for the local non-profit agency Northwest Behavioral Health Services. Before his career as a Human Resources professional, Dan was a business owner of a company that specialized in the manufacturing and distribution of chemicals used in the cosmetic industry.

Payal Patel is a Human Resources Director for Child Guidance Center, a children’s mental health nonprofit. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Human Resources from Middlesex University in London. She holds her SHRM-SCP certification and maintains her UK CIPD Certification. Payal has 15 years of HR and Management experience comprising of both UK and US experience in various industries from nonprofit to finance to retail and hospitality. In addition to working as the Human Resources Director for Child Guidance Center, she also manages the family business in London which is a slightly smaller version of Publix.

Information Security  Presenter

"Information Security in the Workforce"

Drew Brunson, Quadrant Information Security

This presentation will address the threats to information security that are present from within the workforce and the role Human Resources professionals play in helping organizations mitigate the threat. Topics will include identifying a threat as a threat, understanding the difference between a malicious insider and an error, and key elements of a mitigation strategy from an HR perspective.



About the Presenter:

Drew Brunson has spent more than two decades focused on Information Security, first in the publishing industry and then in healthcare as the HIPAA Information Security Officer for Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. Since 2009 Mr. Brunson has consulted across industry sectors in a variety of roles, including penetration testing and social engineering attacks, development and restructuring of corporate Information Security Management Systems, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

As a former Qualified Security Assessor for the Payment Card Industry, Mr. Brunson frequently performs gap assessments for companies attempting to reach compliance with the PCI Data Security Standard. He also consults on ISO 27001 and 27002 compliance, as well as SOX and HIPAA compliance across the U.S. and Canada.

ADA and Accommodations


"ADA and Accommodations in the Workplace"

In the first two months of 2018, the EEOC collected $405,500 from employers, which were all disability discrimination claims. Needless to say, complaints about violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are at an all-time high. Attendees of this program will develop a broad understanding of common ADA accommodations as we review the ADA’s accommodation requirements, and discuss recent developments, common mistakes made by employers that create ADA exposure, and best practices for dealing with ADA accommodation issues. Also within this training, participants will learn how the ADA’s accommodation provision works with specific considerations when determining whether an employee is a ‘qualified individual’ with a disability. This training also explores the interaction of the ADA with other employer obligations such as workers’ compensation and Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).


About the Presenter:

Jen Wilburn, LMHC, CIC, is the Accessibility Consultant at Florida Blue. Jen is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Intrinsic Coach. She works with leadership and individuals with varying disabilities throughout the enterprise to develop innovative solutions for accommodations. She leads many of the company’s initiatives for advancing people with disabilities (PWDs), providing radical inclusion and accessibility for all. She is also the Workforce Chair of the disability-focused Employee Resource Group, possAbilities, where she develops and maintains Florida Blue’s community relationships to promote the hiring and retention of PWDs. Her work significantly contributed to the company receiving the award of “Employer of the Year in the less than 100K Employees Category” with the USBLN in 2017. She also accepted the Disability Equality Index “Best Places to Work for People with Disabilities” Award on behalf of Florida Blue in 2018 for the 4th year in a row. She received her Masters of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The University of North Florida with specialized training as a Certified Intrinsic Coach in Health & Wellness. In addition, she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Creative Writing and English from Florida State University.

"Avoiding the 'Convincing Mosaic' of Discriminatory Intent: Keeping your Employment Decisions from the Jury"

No employer likes the idea of facing a jury in a discrimination or retaliation lawsuit filed by current or former employees. There are steps employers can take to reduce the likelihood of their employment decisions facing scrutiny by a jury. While Human Resources can help, actions and decisions of front line supervisors often have the greatest impact on an employer’s efforts to avoid litigation or end it before the case reaches the jury. This program will review the burden of proof courts apply when deciding whether to dismiss a discrimination or retaliation lawsuit before trial. In addition, through discussion of a hypothetical case and audience participation, the program will examine common mistakes to avoid along with proactive steps supervisors can implement to help avoid having their employment decisions reviewed by a jury.


About the Presenter:

Michael Prendergast is a partner in the Jacksonville, Florida office of FordHarrison LLP. Mike and his partners help employers develop practical and legally sound solutions to employment issues and related business needs. This includes advice and defense of legal claims related to union avoidance, union/management relations, occupational safety and health, employment discrimination, sexual harassment, medical and other leaves of absence, reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities, affirmative action obligations of government contractors, whistleblower laws, and the growing number of other statutes, regulations and common law causes of action that influence today’s workplace. Mike defends employers facing these claims in state and federal court and before various government agencies.
