Attendees will learn about Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970 which requires employers to provide employees with a safe workplace and other state and federal laws governing employee safety. We will also address the interplay between workplace violence and Florida Statute Section 709.251 the Protection of the right to keep and bear arms in motor vehicles parked in employee-owned parking lots and parking garages (the so-called "guns in trunks" law).
Ms.Bonczyk will also address her 2018 research which is pending publication entitled "The Killer in the Next Cubicle." This work is a study of 150 recent occupational murders which includes profiles of victims and killers/alleged killers, common themes, recommendations for risk mitigation, and three key takeaways to help create a safer workplace at a time when the F.B.I. reports that nearly 46% of all active shooter situations occur in businesses and OSHA reports that over 2,000,000 Americans per year fall victim to workplace violence from threats to assaults from harassment to murder.
