Volunteer Opportunity: Mock Interviewers Needed!

It is that time again to plan our Mock Interviews for the high school juniors who are applying for Career Academies of St. Johns 2017 Summer Internships.  All of these students will have completed a unit on interviewing skills beforehand.  We would appreciate the volunteers of the Society of Human Resource Management - Jacksonville Chapter willing to assist with the process this year.  Each student will have a personal 10 minute interview with 5 minutes of feedback on how they might improve for their actual intern interviews to be held the next month. Volunteers are more than welcome to pass this onto other colleagues at work.  Volunteers are welcome to do interviews at more than one school.

Those interested should send an email to Kathy.mignerey@stjohns.k12.fl.us and highlight the session/s at which they wish to volunteer.  Volunteers coming to St. Johns county schools are now asked to complete an on-line volunteer application enabling us to do a background check on you.  Volunteers will be notified by email once approved.  This approval is good for three years at all St. Johns County Schools.  https://stjohns.keepntrack.com/apply

 Internship Sites Needed!

St. Johns County School District has been acknowledged as the best school district in Florida for the past eight years.  One program area that impacts that status are the 19 Career Academies spread out among all of the high schools.  These programs are preparing students for career fields that meet the market demands of northeast Florida.  Students learn about the various careers in the industries and specific skills utilized in jobs in those industries.  Student earn industry certifications that align with those industries and many are able to earn dual enrollment college credits tied to that industry focus.  After their junior year, students have the opportunity to apply for a summer internship to fine-tune their career focus, apply skills learned in class to a job setting and determine further skills needing to be learned.

Our goal is to provide 100 students with either a paid or unpaid 20 hour per week/6 week internship running from June 5 – July 14, 2017.  We are willing to discuss other options if businesses cannot provide an internship for that length of time or within that timeline.  Listed below are the career clusters for which we are still seeking internships.  If interested in discussing options, please complete the attached application and scan and email it to Kathy Mignerey, Career Program Specialist at kathy.mignerey@stjohns.k12.fl.us or call her if you have further questions at (904) 547-4872.  Once the agreement is clarified, the business partner information will be sent to the appropriate high school that houses the related career academy.  For more information about the Career Academy programs, go to academies.stjohns.k12.fl.us.

NOTE: Department of Labor laws state internships can be unpaid when the students are in a learning mode and rotate among various tasks/departments and are not filling a job task for which an employee normally would be paid.  If students will be performing a specific job function for most of their internship, they need to be paid a competitive salary by the employer.
